Today at a gas station I overheard two middle-aged, seemingly attractive women, talking about how much weight they want to lose for the new year, while buying an unnatural amount of junk food and $20 worth of gas on pump 7.
Isn’t it a little stupid to expect your entire life to change in a ten-second countdown to a new calendar year? Don’t get me wrong, I think setting goals and striving towards a better you is an incredible thing to do for yourself, and the people around you; but why is it that you expect yourself to be a different person because the date changed? How have you changed from the person you were in 2012 and did that little countdown have anything to do with it? Why do you need a reason or an excuse to lose ten pounds? Why not start that diet tomorrow? What’s the massive differencebetween December 8th and January 1st?
What I’m really getting at is, suck it up and be yourself. There’s no reason to make resolutions you won’t keep. Make goals, make a bucket list, make a to-do list, do something to better yourself because you want to, not because you want to live up to some silly standard that society set-up for you.
January 1st is just another day.
